My Approach to Reading

To teach reading skills in my classroom I am going to follow a Balanced Literacy Approach. Under this approach the children will practice developing their skills across different areas of reading (Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension)

Balanced Literacy Approach

Total literacy instruction

To teach this approach in the classroom I will be engaging the students in a variety of different ways.

  • I, We, You

    • For this approach I will scaffold my students instruction by first showing them an example, then having them work on the activity as a class, and finally the students will have the knowledge to do the activity independently.

  • Grouping Students

    • When grouping my students for different projects I am going to take their strengths into account so that they are paired in a group that best serves their educational needs

  • Authentic Learning

    • In order to help my students learn literacy I am going to plan my literacy activities to link to other academic content and to real life situations. By doing this I will be teaching my students to use literacy in places outside of the classroom.

Comprehension Activity

This is an activity that we are going to be using to practice our comprehension skills in the classroom. To do the activity the student will need to pick out a fiction book of their choice. Once they have picked their book they will then take one of the gloves and wear it as they read their book. As they are reading the book they are going to look for the key points matching those on the glove. They can then write these points down in their reading log or I will have them complete further activities with their knowledge.

Points on Comprehension Glove:

  • Setting

  • Characters

  • Conflict/Problem

  • Plot/Steps

  • Solution

  • Main Idea

  • Text to Self Connection
