The Classroom Environment

Universal Design of Learning

Making learning accessible to ALL students

To meet the needs of all learners in my classroom I have decided to implement practices found in the theory of the Universal Design of Learning.

I intend to model my learning environment by using the ACCESS strategy.

  • A- Applicable: Use calming colors around the classroom

  • C- Capability: Using aromatherapy in the classroom allows for different scents to be used with differing effects

  • C- Clarity: Use of visual aids around the classroom for students to reference

  • E- Expression: Use different anchor charts around the classroom to communicate different skills to students

  • S- Safety: Ensure that there is space to safely move around the classroom and eliminate potential hazards

  • S- Size/Space: I intend to use flexible seating arrangements so that my students are comfortable in the classroom

My Classroom Procedures

When walking in the hallway we have a class mystery walker to ensure our students are behaving well.
The way I do mystery walker is each time before we walk in the hallway I secretly pick a student to watch. The mystery student needs to be on their best behavior. If they are the mystery student gets an award. This encourages all students to behave as if they were the mystery student

I plan to separate my students into different seating groups. The reason I will do this is because then I can release my students from their seats to different areas of the classroom by calling one group at a time. This will prevent a lot of commotion during classroom transitions

To help my students line up before they walk in the hallway I will place an assigned spot marker for the student at their spot in line. This way when students go to line up they do not get confused about where they should go. I will assign jobs such as line leader, door opener and caboose randomly throughout the year.

For when my students need to turn in an assignment they have completed I will have a bin set up in the back of my classroom for all completed work. To prevent all the children from coming up at once I will ask one member from each group to collect all the work for their classmates and turn it in for them

To help my students learn self management skills I will work with each of my students to help them create personal goals. They will work to keep these goals throughout the year. These will be focused on individualized expectations for each student. By doing this with my students I am teaching them how to set goals outside of the classroom
