My Assessment Philosophy>

In my classroom I intend to not use assessment solely as a tool for deciding grades for students. Instead I intend to use assessment results to aid in planning in further instruction that suits the needs of my students.

Student Learning
Without using the results of assessments effective student learning is not possible. Assessment will be used in my instruction to cater the curriculum to meet the needs of my students. Think of assessment as one leg of a stool to support student learning.

Assessing Literacy

Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test
For this assessment I plan to gauge the vocabulary level of students coming into my classroom. This assessment is very useful because students can look at photos instead of written words. This results in the language barrier being less of an issue

Qualitative Reading Inventory
This assessment is particularly useful because it covers multiple areas of literacy such as fluency and comprehension. This is a test I would use at the beginning and end of the year to measure student progress.

Observation
Survey
This assessment would be most useful when used with students of a younger age because it can be used to see what different literacy skills they already have such as the ability to read through a book properly or if they can recognize the alphabet.
